Charlettetown P.E.I.

Friday, October 11th

Today, I have arranged a 6 hour tour that will cover most of the important sites on the island.

Rusty's Shore Excursion

As we began Rusty’s Shore Excursion we traveled up historic Great George Street and viewed Province House - the seat of Prince Edward Island’s legislature and the venue of the 1864 meeting that resulted in the formation of Canada, giving rise to the slogan - “Birthplace of Canada”.

St. Dunston's Basilica

Traveling through the National Park we passed the port of Covehead Harbour with its fishing boats and lighthouse.

Mussel socking season has just begun

After exiting the park we continued to South Rustico, an Acadian pioneer area. We made a short stop to view the oldest house in Prince Edward Island, PEI’s oldest Roman Catholic church

and the Farmer’s Bank of Rustico, the first community-based bank in Canada and a leader in the credit union movement in Canada.

Moving on toward North Rustico we passed by mussel farms and learned the process of mussel farming.

At North Rustico we saw lobster traps and learned how lobsters are caught....we did not stop here as a couple of the cruise line tours were there...very crowded!

Reentering the National Park we proceeded toward Cavendish and Green Gables. En route we overlooked the famous Cavendish Beach.

Red fox stopped by to say hello!

After a short beach stop we visited the grounds of Green Gables. It is the world renowned house that inspired “Anne of Green Gables” and its sequels, the books about ‘Red Headed Anne’, lovingly written by Prince Edward Island’s most esteemed author, Lucy Maud Montgomery.

We had a great lunch at a small restaurant away from the crowds. I finally got my steamed clams. Only thing I haven't had is a whole lobster. Think I will miss that.

After lunch, we stopped at the Prince Edward Island Preserve Company. Great place...finally found my maple butter!

We returned to Charlottetown through the beautiful rolling hills of central Prince Edward Island.

The final segment of Rusty’s Shore Excursion includes a drive around Victoria Park. We view old Fort Edward and pass by Fanningbank, the official residence of the Lieutenant Governor.

Finally saw some color. This has been the best spot so far for changing colors. Irwin, the owner of RustyRover, was great. He provided a lot of history of the island in a very entertaining way.

Tomorrow is a sea day....am really looking forward to it!
